Max O'RgII, in his book on Austra Ha, Btates that Greab Britain acquired tho colonies at the cost of little blood, bub a good doal of whisky. In colonial society, ho says, there is nothing original, and tho people are content to copy all the shams, follies, and impostures of British venality and adoration of the golden calf. Hypocrisy and cant are more noticoablo in the colonies than in England, and the Australian workman he considers lazy, fond of drink, and a spendthrift, thinking only of ploasures, and t:\King no interest) in the development of tho country. His labor is mercenary. Enormous wages are earned, and these are spent in frivo ity. The writer believes the colonies are too jonlous of each other to care for federation, Colonials are very enterprising, and have all the qualities and foibles of the English.
