OAMARU RACEHORSE OWNERS AND THE NORTH OTAGO JOCKEY CLUB.

(Referee.) Certain owners of horses havo taken up what wo consider a most ill-advibed position against tho North Otago Jockey Club. Because tho club did not, for certain good reasons, see fit to include in tho programme for their mooting next month district races, some half dozen local owners wrote to tho secretary of tho club stating they would not enter their horsos for tho mooting. 'J his letter, it may bo wiid, appears in this issue. Tho Committee of tho club met, and, very properly wo think, resolved, owing to the threat contained in tho letter, to simply receive it. Wo understand that ifc is owing to tho club having dillicultics over tho horses eligible for distiict events that none havo been held since the Autumn Meeting of 181)2. When tho threatened boycott by tho local owners arose, too, | tho club's programme wab already passed by tho Metropolitan Club and distributed. However, apart from all Uii-<, wocoribidor the committee of tho North Otago J.C. took it. dignified and proper sbuid. We i are always prepared to do our best in tho interest of those who havo ju.st giievances, but apart from the question of whether tho Oiimaru owners havo or have not any cause for moving in tho direction they havo done, wo cannot for one moment hold with tho way in which they have thought (it to approach tho Oamaru Club. Anything in the way of a threat from outsiders to the committee of a club that has beeu elected by tho gct.ui'til body of members to carry its affairs is not to bo tolerated for a moment. Jt is to bo regretted that tho owners thought fit to conclude their communication with a threat. Had they not committed this mistake, their letter w ould at least havo boon entitled to consideration. As it was tho O.imaru Club's committee, as wo hive indicated, took the only stand possible under tho circumstances, and wo hope before now tho objectionable letter has been withdrawn,
