LATE HOURS IN OFFICE S AND BANKS. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — My occupation compels mo to keep lato hours, and I notice vrbon walking along Tyne (street) that tho I midnight oil is being burned to a large extent in somo of the Mortgage Company's offices. I am not aware if tho Managers are acquainted with tho facts of the case, bub if they are subscribers to your paper they cannob ploail ignorance any longer. The extent to which this sweating is carried ou is a disgrace to any company, and is calculated to interfere seriously with the health of tho boys omployed. Shearing wet sheep is nothing to continuous employment) at a desk for 14 or 15 hours a day, and if these unfortunate clorks commence work at 0 a.m., their hours cannob fall very far shorb of the time I have stated. I really wish thab out friend Steve JBoreham, whom I am glad to welcome back to Oamaru, would bako up tho cudgels on behalf of these overworked boys, who would be sacked on the apob if they dared utter a word of complaint. Many of the Banks are just as great (minors in this respect, bub m justice to somo I musb admib thab there are exceptions. They all deserve to bo named, and if necessary I shall nob shrink from doing do. Humanitarian.
