Received September 10 at 11 ft.m, Sydney, September 10 The maritime difficulty is settled, Mr Nieoll having re engaged the men at the uuion rate of wages. There have been frequent meetings of owners, and it is rumored that the larger companies are averse to reducing the wagps. Mr Baxter, a contractor, has taken an extensive contracb from the Pro prietary Mine, and has notified the , miners that he is witling to engage a thousand men at 10s per day. He does not recognise the union, and asserts that if the local men decline to take up the offer, he can obtain practical men at a moments notice. A large mob assembled at 2.30 this morning, to meet the train conveying the police and free laborers. The train dashed through the station and made for thft town stition. As it passed through, it was assailed with stones, and several pistol shots were fired. Notwithstanding their alacrity, although they had their bayonets fixed, the police were severely assaulted as they marched to the Town Hall. Several men were injured and one arrest was made. Mr Parker (of Huddart, Parker, and Co.) is a passenger by the Talune, on business connected with tho new service between New Zealand and Australia. The Government have instructed the Agent-Gr«neral to see that the interests of New South Wales in regard to the minting of silver wete not neglected, but did not urge the exclusive right of the colony to coinage, though they consider that it undoubtedly has the best claim. Sir Henry Parkes declines to accept the apology made by the News. It is believed that he will claim LlO,OOO damages, and give anything he may get to charities. Brisbane, September 10. Ib is understood that) the Adelaide Steamship Company notified the Owners' Association that it would decline to make any reduction in the wages, and the Owners' Association feel that it would be useless to proceed without its co-operation.
