COMMERCIAL. OAMARU MARKET REPORT.
North Otago Times Ofncf, Saturday Afternoon. Since laat Saturday considerable animation in the wheat market has been experienced. The continued firmness of the Home market, with frequent reports of sixpenny advances inspired merchants with confidence, and a simultaneous demand for the cereal set in, and culminated in twopenny and threepenny rises. One firm last Monday wrote to a client that ho was to cart hit wheat in, as they had obtained the price he wished, 4s 6d, fot a mixed line of Mold's, red straw and chaff ; another firm placed a laigc line of Tuscan and velvet wheat at equal to 4s lid to the farmer. Merchant! and millers have been closing with offers ot farmers to quit at 4s Gel to 4s 8d for velvet, and 4s 9d to 4s lid for prime lons berried wheats. No wheat save fowls And seconds has been parted with at less than 4« Od during the week. Whether the advance is a pormanent one remain to be teen, and although there is an impression abroad that some are attempting to "rig' the market the probabilities are that the prices going this week will last till the approach of harvest. The advance is unaccounted for save that there is a fear there will not be sufficient wheat for the colonies. To ship Home at 4s lid for Tuscan would hardly pay. Millers locally are pretty well surplied, and do not require to buy much more wheat. However, the advance at Home in price is very gratifying, and with good crops this coming harvest farmers will be able to make up some of the loss of three iudifferent years. Oats, barley and potatoes are not much mentioned. Short oats have been selling from Is 6d to Is 7d ; Danish and Tartars at from Is 3d to li 5d according to quality. Barley is nominal at 2s 3d to 2a 6d. Potatoes are dull at 17s 6d and LI, and unpicked lots are growing in the bags and unsaleable. The other market! are unaltered. Dairy produce is becomiug still more plentiful, and butter is generally of better quality, although a lot of inferior stuff is sent into the market. Best is at Bd, and inferior 3d to 6d ; eggs sd, and plentiful.
