AUCKLAND. October 16.
The bronze modal of the Royal Humana Society of Australasia has boon presented to Thomas Francis Nioholls, mate on board one of the ferry boats running on the Auckland Harbor, for having saved a man named Charles Pollen from drowning in the harbor in April last year. The proposal of J. H. Witheford, that tho New Zealand railways should be sold to an English syndicate was discussed last night by tho Birkonhead Borough Council, who unanimously passed a resolution agreeing with the suggestion. Tho City Council havo accepted a design for the Art Gallery to be used for tho display of tho Mackenzie gifts only. The Tongan Government havo presented a Kextunfc to Captain Crawshaw, of the SVninui, as a recognition of his services on bohulf of tho trade and commerce of Tonga*
