Fat Cattle.— 161 head were yarded, mostly indifferent quality. Competition for good beef was brisk, last week 1 * prices being firmly maintained, but for inferior and medium the demand wan less active. IJesfc bullocks brought L9 2s Cd to L10 10s ; medium to good, L6 23 6d to L8 5s ; light weights and inferior quality, L3 15s to L5 7s 6d : best cowa, L7 17s 6d to L9 ; mo.lium, L4 os to L5 10s ; inferior, L2 17s 6d to L,3 17»0d. Fat Sheep. —3626 were penned, 250 being met ino wethers, the rest crossbred wethers and ewes. The quality was mostly medium. Owing to the absence of buyers for export, prices ruling were hardly up to lost week. Besfc crossbred wethers, 16s to 19s 9d ; ordinary, 13s to 15s 6d ; best crossbred ewes, 14s to 16s 6d ; ordinary, 12s to IS* 6d ; merino wethers, best, 143 6d to 16s Gil ; others, 6s to 1 '2s Gil. Grain.— Wheat— There is no further change of any consequence to noto in the tone of the market. Last week's quotations continue firm, but the business done is only to a very small extent. All the really prime lines in store have now been taken up; and, with trade requirements pretty well satisfied in the meantime, buyers will nob be disposed to operate, except at u reduction on present quotations, until their stocks are lomewhat reduced. Quotations for Northern prime velvet and Tuscan, 4a lOd to 5s ; medium to good Southern, 4s 5d to 4s Od ; inferior to medium, 3s 9d to 4s 3d (ex ■tore, sacks weighed in, terms). Oats— (The market for these is somewhat unsatisfactory. A small demand, it is true, exists, but at prices considerably below those sellers care about accepting. At the moment it it pretty evident that sales of any consequence cannot be efleciecl until sellers are more disposed to meet buyers. Stocks are not being reduced very rapidly, and with only very small enquiry from Australia, also the absence of any inducement to ship Home, it will, it is surmised, be somewhat difficult to maintain present rates, which we give for best feed and milling, Is 6d to Is 6Jd ; medium to good, Is 5}d to Is 61 ; inferior to medium, Is Id to Is 4d (ex ■tore, sacks extra, net cash : fd more f.o.b. Dunedin). Barley— No change from last week. Best malting (nominal), 2s 9d to 33 ; medium, 2» 6d to 2a 9d ; feed and milling, 2s 3d to 2s 5d (ex store, tacks extra, terms).

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report for the week ended October 14 as follows : Store Cattle — The enquiry being made lately has resulted in a little business being done, but not to any great extent. There are not very many very suitable lots offeriag; but whoa the spring grass is a little further forward, aud sellers and buyers become more reconciled in respect of prices, we anticipate considerable business. Meantime we have no sales to report, but have lome pending. Store Sheep.— The bulk of the sorts now changing handa mostly comprise good cross and half-bred hogget*. A very fair demand exists for theie, hut buyers hesitate to give price* demanded by sellers ; consequently the business put through is leas extensive. Only on rare occasions lines of any other description change hands, and from not? until the wool is off sales will be comparatively unimportant. Grass Seeds. —The business done in these is now less extensive. The demand has ittllen off lately very considerably ; at the same time small parcels of ryegrass seed are being placed at prices about equal to those current lately, which are— for local-grown perennial, machine-dressed, 5s Gd to 5s 9d ; Pacey'a (imported), 5s 3d to 5s 6d ; Poverty Bay, Cs 3d to 6s 9d (ex store) ; cocksfoot (small sale), best dressed, 5Jd to 6d ; mediun (nominal), 2Jd to 5d per 1b. Potatoes.— There is no change in either dtmand or values ; quotations from 20s to 30« per ton (sacks weighed in, ex store). Cniff.— The supply is evidently sufficient for requirement*, prices obtaining this week showing no improvement on those ruling last week, which are -for best, 55s to 57s 8d ; medium to good, 47s to 52s 6d ; inferior, 30a to 40a per ton. Dairy Produce.— Tho supply oi salt butter is now fully equal to requirements, the only demand being for local consumption, at pri cs ranging from GJd to 8d for prime. Cheese h^s only a. smull demand, T>ut prices for factory-made are firm at 5d for medium size, and 5Jd per Ib for loaf.
