ENGULPHED ON MOUNT VESUVIUS.
Farther particulars are publishecl concerning the terrible aooident on Vesuvius, in which M, Sylva Jardim lost bit life. He made the ascent of the mountain, accompanied by his friend, M, Mendonoa, and a guide. When the had reached the top they witnessed phenomena whioh inspired the guide with considerable apprehension. Not only volumes of smokd and vapor were issuing from the crater, bat dangerous cracks were seen to open in Tarious places fllM. Jardim nnd Mendonca nevertheless pushed on. They had advanced but • fow steps when suddenly tbe earth orened, and literally fwallowed up «ho unfortuoato M. Jardiui. M. Ho was rescued by the guide, who had remained b?hiud, but who now ran to his assistance. M. Jardiro, who arrived in Paris soon after the Brazilian Revolution, of which was one of the leaders, was only thirty-one years of age. Ho leaves a widow and three ycung cbfldiea.
