WENT TO THE WAXWORKS INSTEAD.
Speaking of the passion for free pawn (••?• • London correspondent.) I beard Toole the other ni^ht tell an amuaing anecdote which I believe has never appeared in print. Onoa upon a time, when playing in Liverpool, he was (he «*id) much pestered bv his hotel waiter for an 'order. 1 The waiter reverently assured Toole that he had long lcmged to see him act, »nd that if • Mr T. 1 would «ive him a free paia tho lmgitg might speedily be gratifnd. Toole pointed out that, inasmuch ns the 1 cal manager was piyin^ him good •i-lnriug 1 tTuis, t would not ■eem quite tho th'ng tn sei d in free passe*. 'Bat/ added Toole, 'rather than diuppjint you, III w llingly pay for yon «O go. Whut par' will you uo ini Ft? K ; ght; hpro'fl eighteen ponce!' The waiter thankfu'lv <ak n^ this, ventured to remark ih-this'vife a'no bad long yearned ' to see Mr Toolu aet' — and that, indteJ, it was for her i<»ke that he bad taken the liberty to aik for an * order.' Whereupon Too'e, feeling flattered (as he sa'd) cheerfully abed another eighteenpence on the obsequious waiter. The next mornicg the popular little comedian, anxtou* to hear (as he couftaied) a little more flcttery, asked the waiter how he and his good lady got oq at the play. Were they comfortable 1 Did they like the pieces 1 etc , etc. ' Well, air,' replied the waiter, with a aott of 'between-manand-man air,' 'to tell you the honest truth, air. when I went 'ome with tho three tob you was good enough to give me, sir my miesua Bhe thought aa how she'd like to go to the waxworks with the money. And so we went there instead, air, and enjoyed ourselves very much, sir. Thanking yon kindly, sir, for a pleasant eveniDg!' Collapae of Toole.
