AUCKLAND. May 30.
Dr Murray, the Rornaii Catholic Bishop of Maitland, who is in ill-health, has left Auckland for Te Aroha. He arrived in this city on his way to San Francisco, but was too ill to proceed. He is accompanied by the Rev. Father Tean. An illuminated address, signed by all ths volunteer officers of the Auckland district, was presented to-day to Lieut, - Colonel Shepherd, who recently com-
nianded the district. The presentation was made by Lieufc,-Co!onel Digtuu at the drillshecl in the presence of a large number of officers and men. The county rate collector for Dargaville (F, L. Beart) haa been arrested on a charge of embezzling L40 belonging to the county. He was brought before the Resident Magistrate at Darg^ville and F. Norton, J.P., at the Dargmllo Police | Court to-day, when the rase was remanded till Tuesday, Bui w.is refused. Two other charges are pending against the accused, Bearc was greatly respect ted in the district, and much bympatliy is felt for his wife and children.
