Tho directors cxpremed surprise Hiab such grievances existed, and promised a searching investigation and ample redress if found to bo tiue. Tn the meantime they havo aufchorNed the deputation to wire to all tho timber st-itions tint the men are absolutely free to purchase Btores wherever they pleaso. At a meeting of tho Trades and Labor Council a letter was read from tho Maritime Council in reply to one sent from tho Auckland Trades and labor Council. Mr Muller, secrobary to the Maritime Council, stilted that ho had formed a Council, as the various trades of Now Zealand had nob given their support to tho Seamen's Union in the light with Mio Northern Steamship Company. Tho struggle cost the Seamon's Union L 14.000, and all tho assistance they got from tho trades in the colony was LBO. To ensure better assistance for one another they had formed a combination now so good thab they had power to enforce their demands owing to their authority over ships at sea.
