COMMERCIAL. DUNEDIN MARKETS.

Fat Cattle. —For to-day 'a market 204 head were yarded. A large proportion were heavy-weight bullock* in prime condition, the balance consisting of medium to inferior bullock* and heifer*. Again the demand was slack, owing, no doubt to moat of the butchers being partly supplied from laat week. Bidding was exceedingly languid, and prices ruled from 0s to 10s a iiead lower than last week. Best bullocks sold at L6 to L7 15* ; ordinary, L5 10a to L6 ; cows and heifers, L2 5s to L2 15s. Wright, Stephenson, and Co•old, for the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, Limited (Totar* estate), 12 prime cows at from L5 7s 6d to L4 2s 6d; for Messrs £. Price and Son (Waimate), 5 bullocks at up to L4. Fat Sheep. —To-day's entry consisted of 3194, about 60 of which were merinos. About three-fourths of the number were wethers and maiden ewes, the balance old ewes. Amongst the former were some very nice lines of freezing wethers ; indeed, taking the sheep yarded all round, we have seldom seen a nicer lot at Burnside Owing to an unfortunate misunderstanding with shipowners, there is no freezing space available at present, and buyers for this class were quit* out of the market ; and as butchers could buy more suitable weights on easier terms, there was a serious fall in value of best mutton. Bidding was very ulow right through the sales, prices ruling from Is Od to , 2s per head lower than last week. Beat wethers sold at 10a to 12s 3d ; ordinary, 94 to 10a ; best owes, 8s 6d to 10a 3d ; ordinary, 5s 9d to 7s 9d ; merino wethera, 7» to 8* 6d. Best pens, 7s 8d to 8s 8d 5 ordinary, 6s to 6a tfd j a few extra prime up to 11b 9d. Pigs. —137 came forward for to-day '• market, consisting principally of suckers and porkers, with a few pens baconers. Bidding was quiet, and prices ruled rather in favor of buyer*. Sucker* told at 8s to Us ; atoret, 15a to 24a ; porkers, 26a to 34a ; baenners, 43* to 57a ; a few extra heavy up to 63s Store Cattle.— The business done in theao in not extensive. Odd lota are occasionally changing hands, but there is no prosing demand. Graziers are not disposed to operate, except at prices more on a level with those ruling for fat. Speculators aro now more anxious to quit ; but feed ia going back, so that buyer* for fattening aro careleas to purchase. Store sheep. —The scarcity of grass has hindered business considerably in this stock, and so far no very large lines are changing hands. There is some enquiry for two, four, and six-tooth crossbreds, and if suitttblo lots were available a large business could be done. For two tooth and fourtooth merino ewes and wethers there is also some demand. Sheepskins.— On Tuesday last a moderate catalogue was submitted, consisting principally of butohers' green polts and lambskins, with a few lots ot dry skins from country clients. There was a large gathering of buyers present, and keen competition for all classes, prices being quite up to last week's. Dry orossbreds sold at 2« yd to 6s 3d. do merinos, 2* Id to 5s 8d ; do pelts, 2d to Is 2d ; green pelts, lOd to 2s 3d ; do lambs' Is 8d to 2s 3d. Hides.— During the past week the local market has remained unchanged, nor do we at present see any prospect of prices improving for some tims. The market is well supplied with all classes, but principally with light and inferior sorts. The bulk are takon by local manufacturers, there being very little inducement to shippers to operate, outside markets also being low. We quote : Prime heavies, 2|d to 3d per lb ; medium to heavy, 2£d to 2,d ; light and inferior, l£d to2d. Tallow.— The local market is but barely supplied, and there is hardly enough coming forward to meet actual requirements. There is a steady demand, and all coming to hand meets a ready sale, local manufacturers being the purchasers. We quote: Prime rendered mutton, 18s 6d to 20s per cwt ; medium, 16a to 17* Od ; inferior, 12s (id to 15s ; best mutton cauls, 12s 6d to 13s G.i ; medium, Us to 12s ; inferior, 10s to 11s. Grass Seeds.— There are some sales of ryegrass effected, chiefly machine dressed. There are some parcels of undressed also being dispose*! of, but at prices which can hardly oe very satisfactory to growers. Wu quote machine dressed, 3s to 3s 6d ; undressed, Is 6d to 2s 6d (sacks extra). Cocksfoot : There is nothing of any oonsequonce being done in this seed at the moment, and we quote nominally 3d to 4$d per lb. Potatoes.— The market has been over supplied during the past week by heavy deliveries from the north, and in consequence oivlcs are difficult to effect (especially if the quality is not extra prime) at satisfactory prices. Best kidneys are sold for 50s to OOs, while others realise from 30s to 45s per ton. Chaff. — Since our last report deliveries have been on a more extensive scale, and prices easier ; at the same time there is a market for all offering. We quoto best, L2 17s Gd to L3 5s ; inferior to medium and k'ood, 20s 10 50s per ton. Dairy Produce. — We have no improvement to note in the position of the market, u Inch still continues extremely dull. We quote butter (nominal), 5d to 6d ; factory cheese— larg* 4d to 4jd, small 5d ; Akaroa, 8d to 4d per lb.
