ENTERTAINMENTS AT OTIAKE.
(FROM OTJR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) • A picnic was given here on Boxing Day k to the school children, under the supenntenance of the school committee. It was largely attended by people residing in the O'ckaike and Kurow district, and it wm generally eupposed that not Ipbb than -JUU were on the ground. The prizes given to , the children" were oil drawn lor, «o that the youD-eat child had the came oppor tantty of petting a good priz* aa the oldest, and ihe plan kept down all grumb linoe. There were then raoes ond games for^what remained ef the books and toys, which gave them another chance of getting an extra prizs. A sports committee was formed ©v the ground for the management of athlotlc sports among the full grown children, and the results were as follows : 150 yards race, seven entries, C. Robinson, 1 ; J M'Cone, 2. Cabertoaslnp, 6 entrieß— J Grant, 1 ; W btrachan, 2nd. Putting the ball, 5 entries— W Monroe, 1; J Grant, 2. Blarrled Women's Race, 5 entries— Mrs Orr, 1 ; Mrs Smart, 2. Wrestling, G entrieß-J M'Cone, 1 ; James M'M'Cone 2 200 yds handicap, 5 entrieß— W Monroe, 1,C JoLnatone, 2. High jump, 6 entries— C Johnstone, i ; Jaa M'Cone, 2. At the olose of the sportß all eat down to a hearty luncheon, which had been providod in anticipation that the numbers would be large. This closed the outdoor proceedings of the day, and I believe everyone on the ground felt well satisfied wlfh their day's amusement. The ground on which the sports and picnic were held was a paddock belonging to Mr Aikenhead, to whom great praise and many thanks are due (or the kindly manner in whioh he spared no pains to assist in making ereryona comfortable" Thanks are also due to Mr Goddard for sending his brake to take people to and from the picnic. "* ' A ooncert and dance were then held in tbe school, Mr Dasler In the chair. The following are the names of the singers : Miss Grant, Miss Milmine, Mr Robineon, Mr Ranwick, Mr Scott, Mr M'lnues, Mr Davidson, and Mr Diwkins. Messrs Robinson and Renwick played an overture on the violin. A hearty vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the concert. Afterwtrda dancing was commenced (with Mr M'lnnes as M.C, and MessJS Ranwick and Robinson supplying the music), nnd was kept up with great spirit till the Bniall hoars in tha moraing. Oa the whole the day and night were moat eDjoyable, both for amusement and the social intercourse that w»3 got by so many people being gathered together.
