SOUTH AMERICA AND THE WOOL TRADE.
_^ . b bearing on the question of the wool produce of South America, some statistics of an official character have been made public by the United States Consul in this city, which show that in the Argontine Republic, covering; an area of 000,386 pquare miles, there were in 1883, 72,000,000 sheep, as against 64,657.200 in Australia, and that the number of bales of wool shipped in 1882 w»s 238 914, of which England took only 2733, France, Belgium, and Germany absorbing 167,610. The sheep are principally merinos (Nigritas and Rambouille'), The climate of the Argentine Republic, it may be added, is much less favorable than our own to the production of fine long staples, so that if we aim at quality in preference to quantity, we can defy competition and stcure the top price in the market, of which we may enjoy a virtual monopoly. — Sydney Mail.
