An extensive fire occurred to-day at the Charter House buildings, by which 10 warehouses and several houses were destroyed. The Shipping Company's R.M.S. Ruapehu, from Wellington, August 30, arrived at Plymouth this morning, with her cargo of frozen meat in good condition. Received Ootober 8, at 8 p.m. London, October 8. The damage done by the fire in Charter House buildings is estimated at half a million pounds. It is announced that the territory of the King of Dahomey, on the West Coast of Africa, Las been placed under a Portuguese Protectorate at the request of the King of Dahomey. Received Ootober 9, at 9 30 p m. London, October 6. Consols are quoted at par. New Zealand securities are firm at previous quotations. The bank rate of discount is at 2 per cent, and the market rate I£. Adelaide wheat, ex slore, remains at 365. Off coast cargoes are realising 35s 9d, an advance of 3d. New Zealand wheat is unaltered at 28a to 345, ex store; and 31s 6d, off coast. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is LI 1,700,000, a t eduction of LBOO.OOO during the week. The proportion of reserve to liabilities has fallen to 33 per cent.
