Joseph Spencer and William Colltna, two A.B.'a of the ship Soukar, were convicted at the Lyttelton R.M. court to. day of broaching cargo, and aentenced to six months' hard labor each. It appeared that owing to their nefarious practice on the voyage out, the ahip had a narrow escapo of being burnt at tea. Mias Sptrry, of Wellington, hai been tntrusted with the tnak of painting a portrait of Mr Macandrew to be placed in the university hall. The night alarm to tpat the celerity with which tha volunteers would turn out on a nudden emergency, came off at 11.30. The signal was the firing of two guns, and the ringing of the city and suburban fi rebel la within a very few minutes there waa a very large muiter at the garrison hall. The Port Chalmers men were brought to town in a •pfctil train, and there waa an immense turn out of people. The parade atatei handed in showed that 804 volunteers paraded — not very far ahort of the full strength. Id tha country districts, 219 volunteers turned out at their respective railway itationa.
