LOCAL GOVERNMENT. TO THE EDITOR.

Sin,— Nothwhhatanding that local government is to receive attention at the hands of the parliament n^w about to Resemble in Wellington, a fresh start is made in this district with the petition for the dismemberment of the county. I thorn-lit that this would be the inevitable <>v come of the election to the position of road board clerk. The poßt of engineer would then have to be filled up, and no doubt thia would be all cut and dried as before. Tien the office would have to be removed from Oarnaru to— Well, " A word to the wise," &c.

THE BAD AND WORTHLESS are never imitated or counterfeited. This is especially true of a family medicine, and it is positive proof that the remedy imitated is of the highest value, Aa soon as it had been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop Bitters waa the purest, best, and moat valuable family medicine on earth, many imitations eprung up and began to Bteal the notice? in wnich the press and the people of the country had expressed the merits of H. 8., and in every way trying to induce suffering invalids to use their stuff instead, expecting to make money on the credit and good name of H. B. Many others stnrted nostrums put up in aimilar style to H, 8., with variously devised namc3 in which the word "Hop" or "Hops" were used in a way to induce people to believe they were the same as Hop Bitters. All auch pretended remedies or cures, no matter what theur atyle or name is, and especially those with the word " Hop " or " Hops " in their name, or in any way counected with them or their name, are Imitations or counterfeits. Beware of them. Touch none of them, Use nothing but genuine American Hop Bitters, with a cluster of green Hops on the white label, and T)r Soule's name blown in tho glass, Trust nothing else. Druggists and Chemißts are earned against dealing in imitations or counterfeits.

Wicked fob Clergymen.—" I belisve it to be all wrong and even wicked for clergymen or other public men to be led Into giving testimonials to quack doctors or vile etuffa called medicines, but when a renlly meritorious article is made up of common valuable remedies Known to all, and thata'l physicians use and trust in daily, we ahould freely commend it. I, therefore, cheerfully and heartily oommend H<p Bitters for the gondthey have done me and my friends firmly believing they have no equal for family use. I will not be without them." — Rev , Washington, D.C.U.S.A.
