PROPOSED TRAMWAY.

A meeting of yontlomon interostod in the formation of a Tramway Company was hold yesterday afternoon in Messrs Dennison nnd Grant's office in lichen stroot. There wore a good number present, and Mr Allun was voted to the chair. Mr Donnison stated that ho had gone over tlio matter of laying down a tramway with Mr M'Combo, who whs possessed of reliable information at to cost, etc, of the Dunodin tramways, and had ascertained the probable cost of putting down suoh a line at was proposed. Mr Donniion then on lured into particular* of first coit, in unteninoo, etc. The daily oost of maintenance was estimated'at 48i at thb outside. The line proponed would be from the Railway Station along Thames ntrent as far, at present, as the Waitaki High School, a distance of 2\ miles The trip would not take more tlian about 20 minutes, and at that rate an average of G passengers por trip at 4d would pay exponses. The oost of laying the lino, including plant and everything, ho estimated at L3OOO. An opinion was expressed by many of those present that the line should be at odoo extended as far at the racecourse. Mr Dennison continued to state that the proposal was to start with a capital of L5OOO in £ shares, and cull up L3OOO in 12 months at three months intervals. Mr Mirams suggested that it might perhaps be advisable to call up the whole L5OOO, particularly if the line were oarried as far as the racecourse. In answer to a question, Mr Denninon said it had been proposed to ask the oorporati m to grant the company 21 years lease of the roads freo. The oounoil were, he thought, gen orally favorable to the idea. Mr Donnison further stated that he had received promises from several gen tU men to take up 60 or 100 shares. Mr Greenfield thought any movement would be premature till they had obtained permission from the oounoil. He would propose that a committee should bo appointed to interview the borough and county counoils. It was rnsolved that the Chairman and Messrs Moss and Dennison wait on the corporation and county oounoil and report to an adjourned meeting to be oonvonod as oarly as possible.
