BALCLUTHA. April 14.
Messrs Blair, 8011, and Higginson, engineers, arrived hore to-day, and havo been engaged taking evidence as to tho cauio of tho damage to Inch Olutha and neighborhood during the floods of 1878. Eleven persons havo boon oxaminod. Tho enquiry in not yet concluded. At tho Ifc.M. Court horo to-day Isabella Hamlyn was charged with the murder of hor now born infant at Stirling, on thy 6th March. Evidence wai givon as to tho finding of the body in a water closet at tho Stirling Hotel, on April 4th. Also, that tho accused had gono to the hotel on March Oth, and remained till the 9 h, when nothing remarkable waa noticed, buc some blood stains were found in hor bodroom after she left Dr Reid, of Milton, made a post mortom fexaruination, and i»ava his. opinion that tho child had breathed, but could not say whether it had boon born alive. Accused entered the service of Mrs Fingard on tho 15th February, when olio gave hor name as Jessie Campbell. She left on the 6th March, as she said to go to the Hospital. She was pregnant, and made no effort to oonooal it. She was in the service of Mrs Porter, South Tokomairiro, from November Ist to tho end of .January, when she loft, at sho said to go to her inothcr. Mrg Porter had spokon to her about her condition, and agreed to take her back after •ho had given birth to the ohild, Sho accordingly returned on March 19th, and remained till apprehended.
