OAMARU-NASEBY RAILWAY.

A mooting of the sub-committee appointed to deal with matters affecting the construction of the Oamaru-Naaeby railway was held in Mr Sumptor'e office yesterday. The Mayor, as ohairrcan of the committee, presided, and there were present besides Mr Sumpter, the Secretary, and Messrs Reid, Brown, Steward, and Dennison. Some conversation took place on matters which had transpired and business which had been transacted sinoe the recent meeting of the ooramittee, and after discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Sumpter, seconded by Mr Steward, to telegraph to Mr de Lttutour, M.H.R., in the following terras, namely — "Have received short telegram from Mr Shrimski stating that Minister absolutely refused to assist. Oomraittee earnestly request you, as being less locally interested, to urge upon Minister to get financial help to settle survey. Failing this, try to get sum placed upon Supplementary Estimates yourself. Please reply immediately. Oommittee meet to-morrow to oonsider your answer. State if prospeot of suooess, and whether you oan re* commend any other course that we oan take to help you." It was further resolved—" That it be urgently represented to the Minister for Publio Works that the Oommittee is in possession of information which shows conclusively that the levels at which the Windsor-Livingstone line is being run will, if adhered to, render it impossible to carry on the extension to Naseby at any future time without altering the levels of the five miles nearest Livingstone, That these five miles of the Windsor-Living-stone line are as yet untouched, and the Committee earnestly urges that before letting any part of this mileage a survey be ordered, with a view to the line being completed to Livingstone on such a level as w^ll enable a good starting point for the extension to Naseby to be reached.

Alio that tho Oommittoo have ascertained that th« question of, at any future time, •xtending the line to Naseby hns not been taken into account in making the survey for tho Windsor-Livingstone line, and they learn that there would bo no difficulty at the present stage in running the remainder of tho line on such levels as would suit such extension. Tho Committee, therefore, earnestly urge that the necessary instructions may be given. '* The sub-ootnmittoo then closed its pro. ceedings, not, however, before resolving to moot again at 11 o'clock next day, and ■ agreeing that "in tho event of no satisfactory roply boing by that time received, then that the chairman be requested to proceed to Wellington forthwith to endeavor to urge on the Minister for Works the necessity of causing the levels of the remaining live miles of tho WindsorLivingstone line to be revised — work in tho meantime on that portion to be postponed — also to endeavor to induce Mr de Lautour and tho members for the district to do nil in tlioir powor to sooure the placing of L5OO on the Supplementary Estimates for the purpose of causing a completo survey for tho extension to Kyeburn to be made."
