INVERCARGILL. August 3.
A mooting of influential citizens was hold last night to consider the political •ituation. Mr .T. T. Martin was in tho chair. It was resolved that thoso present select ono candidato to contest tho coming election of a inombor for Invercargill. Thereupon Messrs T. M. M'Donald, J. It. Outhbertson, and J. W. Bam woro proposed. The first named, who is most popular horo, positively declined to stand. A ballot was then taken between the remaining two, and Mr Bain selected, the votes boing ."9 to 27. The mooting then formed itsolf into an association to watch over tho political interest of tho town, and to promote constitutional Government in opposition to "Groyism." All Vhe pvesont mcmb-jis in the Honso (Dr Hodkinson, and Me 'tis Joyce, Fold wick, find Shanks) will si and aj/nin, and also Hirst for ltivorton, nnd Kinross for lnvorcargill. A seven -roomod cottago at Gladstone was destroyed by firo early this morning. The house was owned by Mr ]3asstian, and, it is bolioved, was insured. The furniture was owned by Mrßronnan, and was insured in tho New Zoaland Oflico for L 250.
