The Customs Revenue collected at tho Port of Wellington for the month ending to-day amounted to L12.563 8s 9d. For tho corresponding month of last year it was L16,793 11s Gd. During tho month of May 85 births and 31 deaths were registered in Wellington, and 24 marriage certificates issued. Captains Hewitt, Rose, and Cross, who form the Royal Commission touching the wreck of the |.s. Taupo, returned from Tauranga yesterday. Jt is understood that they have not yet concluded their labors. * A supplementary gazette authorises tho shooting of hares within the counties of Maniototo, Vincent, Waikouaiti, Lake, Peninsula, Taiori, Bruoo, Olutha, and Tuapeka, between Ist June and 31st July. ' The middle line of railway from Clutha to Catlins River is defined. The experiment of lighting the trains on the Wellington and Featherstone railway, with gas manufactured en route, has at length Men rewarded with entire success. A trial was made on a train a night or two ago, and proved conclusively that so noon as the trains are fitted with fiomplete apparatus, it will be perfectly oasy to light them with safety and economy. Preparations are now in progress to cany out this system of lighting, which probably will be applied to all New Zealand railways, from its great superiority in every way to the dirty and insufficient oil light hitherto in use. A man, on whose word we can rely (says the New Zealauder), informed us late last night that he had brought to town seyeral ounces of alluvial gold, found in one of the up-country districts. At present we are not at liberty to mention the locality, as the party has not yet secured" his own interests and wjshes to make further investigations; but we haye every reason to put faitU in iht statement of our informant. Mr Ballard, Cadet Instructor to the Telegraph department, was presentod with an address and a gold pin this afternoqn by the cadet* of the department, prior to his departure for the South. The perjury case against Mr Kinross, of Napier, occupied the Resident Magistrate's Oourt, all day. The examination of tip ' Native witnesses was very slow, *U they faid' liayjng to bo tak«p down in both Maori and Euglish. Very little progress was therefore made, and nothing very important was elicited. The chief witness was Pari.iwenn, who deposed that Kinross n<>w j ( claimed certain lands of his own, known j 1 | as Kaukawa, in payment for spirits sup- j t

plied to witness. The land had been mortgaged to Kinross, but only for four years. Witness had got goods and money from Kinross on various occasions. He had transacted business with Kinross through George Morgan, who acted as interpreter. The goods of various kinds had been debited [by Kinross to him, and laid against his interest in tho Kaulcawa estate. Ho always got whatever ho asked for, in, connection with the Kaukawa estate, faoui Mr Kinross' store, whether goods, monoy, or spirits. He could not say how much spirits he got, but he used to get two cases at a time. The spirits were all charged agaiust the mortgago on tho Kaukawa estate. Ho always signed a document when he got goods, spirits, or money. He did not understand tho contents of these documents. Mr Kinross used to tell him the amounts of tho cheques. He could not read himself. The case was further adjourned to June 10th. Juno 1. Imogene Flinders, a married woman, attempted suicide by throwing herself from tho wharf into* the harbor. When rescued she was nearly dead, and was taken to the Hospital.
