WELLINGTON. May 27.

There has been really very little exoitement over the Mayoralty contest today. Neither side appeared well organised, and the total number of rotes polled was very small. Throughout to-day Hutcheson appeared the favorite. Tht result of the poll was : Hutcheson, 690 , Hunter, 644. Majority for Hutcheson, 35. The body found at Island Bay yester1 day has been identified as that of John Duch, a carpenter, who left home a fan hours before the body was found, saying he was going for a walk, and apparently in good spirits. He leaves a wife and three children. The Court of Appeal was occupied all day with the case of Kawanta v. Kinross, and the Resident Magistrate's Court with the proseoution of Kinross for perjury. Both cases are unfinished. A. specimen of $epic ienthia, or cuttlefish, ten feet in length, has been washed ashore here, and the skeleton preserved by Professor Kirk for the museum. The Court of Appeal to-day upheld the conviction of Thos. Williams, secretary, of a Forester's Court, convioted at last session of embezzling court funds. With reference to the New Plymouth disturbance, it is understood that Mr Caverhiil is in communication with the Government, and does not consider the circumstances so critical as have been reported. Mr Parris, in the absence of Major Brown, is making all possible enquiries into the matter, and he informs the Gorernment that no land has been entered upon, except Mr Gaverhill's paddocks. It is probable the Hinemoa will be sent to New Plymouth with stores, etc., but it is not considered necessary to send up any of the men of the reserve now in the depot, as it seems to be still a moot point whether the natives are not only asserting a proprietary right which they mean legally to try, without any intention of committing violence. A man named James Turner, while attempting to jump on the tramway this evening, foil and broke three of his ribs.
