At the City Police Court to-day, John L«vrU, undort«kor, wm ohargml fur "thai on the 25th December, 1878. James Scanlan, late of Dunedin (not being one of the aboriginal native race of New Zealand) died at Dunedin, and on or about the 27th the said John Lewis buried the body of the said James Scanlan, and did unlawfully and wilfully omit to be caused to be transmitted to the Registrar of Births and Deaths for the district of Dunedin a certi6cate of such burial, countersigned by the minister officiating at suoh burial, or by two reapeotable witnesses, being householders, contrary to section 32 of the Registration of Births and Doatha Act, 1870." Defendant denied that he had been guilty of wilful neglect Defendant was fined 40s and costs. This is the first case of the kind heard here. At the afternoon meeting of the City Council, Cr. Fish expressed the opinion that it was time the sewage question was grappled with, and stated that he intended to put a resolution on next week's order paper with regard to this subject. The Council would hare to go to Parliament, and to borrow money in order to deal with the matter.
