WELLINGTON. May 17.

A football player named Sandeland, who oame here recently from Melbourne,

has had his passag* paid back, and » good situation obtained for him by the Geelong Footbill Club. The Government find that they have no power to substitute Monday for Saturday a* a bank holiday. Cowan, the bigamist, has been further remanded: The assault case against Henry Anderson, editor of the Chronicle, was concluded to-day. He reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Th« crossaction — Anderson v. Easby — was then proceeded with, and Anderson swore that I Easby had first struck him with the tongs. Mrs Anderson proved that her husband was sober when lie went to see Easby, and when he returned he was bleeding. She had gone with him to see Easby next day, to tfy and settle the matter. The magistrate said he would leave it to the jttry to decide between them. Easby's counsel protested against this, and said he would call evidence. The case was then adjourned till thin day. Andersons own recognizance was accepted. A public meeting last night resolved to take steps to establish a gymnasium. Upwards of 200 members are already onrolled. Wm, Hutchinson and George Hunter were to-day nominated for the Mayoralty. A phonograph is now being exhibited hare. The Government hare decided not. to take any steps in reference to the false statement made by the Timani Herald, that the Bank of New Zealand had dinhonored several Government cheques in consequence of having insufficient funds to meot them. Ministers are believed to regard the report as calculated to aiFoct the colony rather than the Government, and the bank does not deem the attack coming from such a quarter of sufficient consequence to call for legal procredings against the author. It is worthy of note that the Government credit balance in the bank at the time referred *to was L 243,000. The Government have received a telegram from Mr Sheehan to-day to the eftect that he started for Kihikihi to conduct some further negotiations with R»wi, with the object of arranging for throwing open some additional country and setting it aside for railway purposes ; also, with the view of further cementing and improving the alliance with Rewi and his tribe.
