TIMARU. January 31.
Tiie total Customs return* at the port of Tiraaru for the month of January amount to L1905 10a 9d— made up of spirits, L774 13a lOd ; cigars, LlO 17s Cd ; tobacco, L205 2a 6d ; wine, LIGS 16m 2d ; ale, L6O ; tea, Ll4l 18s 6d ; sugar, L149 9a 8d ; goods by weight, L34 9s 9J ; ad valorem, L154 18s ; other duties, L1 56 18s 3d ; other receipts, Lilt 7s 4d. For January, 1878, the total was LUBB 10s 10d. The vital statistics for the tnontb of January : — Marriages, 11 ; births, 31 ; deaths, 17. There were only fire deaths during the month of December last. The increase of fatal cases is due to the drought and the scarcity of water. This morning the wind changed round from south-west to south-east, and drove a heavy sea into the roadstead. The Harbormaster ordered the vessels to sea, and all went but the George Noblo and Beautiful Star. This evening the wind and sea hare gone down in shore, but a mountainous sea is running outside. It is feared that the ketch Hnon Belle, which put to sea with the othor vessels will, owing to the wind dropping, be driven ashore somewhere on the Ninety-Mile Beach. The Breakwater is stauding magnificently.
