Tiie official declaration of the poll for the election of a member for Mataura, took place to-day, when Mr Shanks was declared elected by a majority of 59. Both candidates addressed the electors, but only local matters were referred to. rß^r,r B^r, Kinross,' ' the ' defeated oandidate, bitterly' attaoked'hb opponent and Messrs Fold wick and Joyce, M.H. R.'s. The Bey. Mr Byng, of Dunedin, lectured in the new theatre to-night, on "Tha Archives of the Universe." The lecture was a success. An inquest was held at Otatti to-day, on the body of a man named Hayes, who had been killed by a dray passing over him. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
Fifteen thousand cotton operatives are on strike at Oldham.
