Mr Buckstone, the actor and dramatist, is in great distress in hii old age. The Whitehall Review hai opened a lubscrip* tion for the relief of his necessities. Florence Marryatt, the English novelist, knowu in home society as Mrs Ross Church, has not obtained a decree of divorce from her husband Colonel Thomas Church. The great Trenton Colliery Company have closed their mines till trade imprnres. During a fog in the Mersey on November 26, a ferry boat ran into a vessel on the anchor line. A panic ensued, and several persons leaped overboard and wort drowned. The Kaffir war is exciting great interest. Vigorous measures have been taken for the suppression of the rebellion. The Transvaal mail steamer (Cape Line) is hired to transport reinforcements, and will sail early in December. Lady Gooch was committed for trial for attempting to pass a bogus baby npon Sir Francis as his son and heir, but the Grand Jury ignored the Bill. Berlin, December 25. Bismarck is working hard at finanos matters. A committee of three Prussian mem* bers and representatives of other States has been appointed to elaborate a scheme of tax reform, which, when ripe, will be laid before the Reichstag for approval. Versatile*, December 21st The Senate reinserted in the Budget the grant of 200,000 franc* for augmenting the stipends of the clergy, struck out by the Chamber of Deputies previons to adjournment. This made the reassembling of the Chamber necessary, and it to-day rejected the grant. The Senate then concurred, and the Chamber adjourned till the 16th of January, London, December 14th. Dean Stanley left London to attend the Prince of Wales, the Princess Christian, and Prince Leopold last evening, and to spend the anniversary of the Prince Consort's death at Windsor, and is remaining, though the memorial service was not held. The Princess of Wales and Princess Beatrice were also at Windsor with the Queen.
