OAMARU HARBOR BOARD.

Tho first meeting of the Board under the new Harbors Act took place yesterday morning. Present — Mr G. Sumpter (in the chair), the Hon. H. J. Miller, Messrs Steward, Shrimski, and Gilchriat. Mr Sumpter was re-elected chairman, pending tho election of the new Board. Some doubt existing as to the legality of the last meeting, the whole of the resolutions passed at that meeting were readopted ; the minutes were then read and adopted, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. Cip tain So well wrote suggesting the removal of the danger light to a more advantageous position, and it was resolved that application be made to the Commissioner of Customs to have the desired change made. The Clerk to the Kakanui Road Board wfotei stating that that Board had elected its Chairman to a seat in the Harbor Board ; and a similar letter from the Waitaki Road Board aunounced the election of Mr D. Borrie. Tho Secretary reported that some difficulty existed with regard to the approach to the Flagstaff, which was through Mr Patersons paddock, the lessee complaining of 4he damage done to his fencing, and asking that a gate might be placed there. The matter was referred to the Municipal Council. A nunber of the new lnnd tax forms were laid on the table, and some conversation took place as to whether the Board or its tenants were liable for the tax. Some doubt was expressed as to whether the Board should, in filling up the papers, include the whole of its property, whether leased or not. Ultimately it was agreed to refer the matter to the Board's solicitor for his opii nion thereon. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Shriinski— That the Secretary be requested to lay upon the table at the next meeting a list of all persons in the employ of the Board, their several occupations, and the rate of wages attached to each. On the motion of Mr Steward, it was resolved — That the secretary be requested to convene a meeting of the committee appointed to inspect and report upon the Board's endowment, with a view of such report being prepared. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned till Monday, the day of tho annual meeting.
