INVERCARGILL. January 6.

The nomination of candidates for the representation bf Matayra in the House of Representatives, took place to-day. Mr H. Jaggers proposed Mr Shanks, stating that he had known that gentleman for a long time, and thought he would look after the true interests of the district, were he elected. Mr Hugh Carewell seconded Mr Shanks' nomination. Mr S. Morton nominated Mr Andrew Kinross, merely remarking that he would leave that genftieman to explain his views himself. Mr Richards seconded the nomination in a speech highly eulogistic of Mr Kinross. Mr Shanks then intimated that, as he would have an opportunity of addressing the electors on a future occasion, he would not trouble them with any remarks. Mr Kinross then addressed the electors, The show of hands was slightly in favor of Mr Kinross, and a poll was demanded on behalf of Mr Shanks. Iv the police court this mnrniusr Jeffrey Grant, Dan. Murray, and John Reid were charged with assaulting and wounding John Ryan, on the Ist inst. Grant was also charged with resisting the police while in the execution of their duty. It would appear from evidence given by Sergeant Twohy that the row originated through a drunken brawl, and was of a serious character. His Worship said that it was a very bad case, and had the police not arrived on the scene opportunely, a murder might have been committed. Grant wm sentenced to two months' hard labor for assault, and one month for resisting the police ; Reid to one month's hard labor, while Murray was discharged with a caution. The following gentlemen have been nominated by the School Committees in the district, for the seat on the Education Board rendered vacant by the death of Sir John Richardson : — T. Perkins, A . Kinross, A. Toshach, S. Hodgkinson, T. Denniston, J. Morrison, and J. M'Ardeel. Only 22 out of the total of 50 Committees have sent in a nomination. A petition is going the rounds praying that the sentence of death recently passed on Welsh, the Waikawa murderer, may be commuted to one of imprisonment for life. Mr Mitchell, on behalf of the Premier, telegraphs to a townsman that instructions have been given for trains to be run for a short time at reduced rates on the occasion of the opening of through communication by rail between Christchurch and lnvercargill.
