The Horticultural Show was hold today, and again attracted a large number of visitors. At the Caledonian Sports there was a fair attendance, though not so large as on the previous day, and the proceedings passed off most satisfactorily. The first event, quoits, for boys under 15, was won by J. Wiseman. Putting the 141b ball were won by M'Kenzie. The reels and strathspeys were won by G. M'Rae, the judges stating that he had performed in a very high class manner, not having missed a note. For the Reel of Tulloch, the winner was M'Ellar, who was said to be the best by far that has been seen on the ground. A half-mile handicap rmce was won by Kelly «• he liked. The other events in the programme wore unimportant. A special prize was offered for wrestling (Cornish style), and was eagerly competed for, Perry and M'Coll tyeing. The gate money for the two days amounted to about L 250. Three men appeared in the Police Court this morning to answer a serious charge. It appears that on the previous day a row occurred in a Government cottage within * short distanc* of the town, and on the police proceeding to the scene, they found that a man, named Wy.in, had been considerably knocked about, and lay on the floor in a very weak state, principally induced from a blow he had received on his head with a bellows during the row. On the police officers' arrival they were considerably interrupted in their duties by the protection afforded to the combatants by some women, but finally they succeeded in arresting the men, whose namos are Grant, Reid, and Murray. The prisoners were brought up this morning and remanded. It would seem the blows were struck during a drunken row. - % News has just been received that a bay nine years old, son of Donald Stewart, settler, Oreti, was accidently killed by a horse last night. No further particulars are to hand. January 3. Mr Andrew Kinross, one of the candidates for Mataura, in the place of Mr W. Wood, addressed a meeting of the electors to-night.
