OAMARU WATERWORKS.
A special meeting of the Municipal Council, to take into consideration the question of proceeding with the works, was held last night. Present— his Worship the Mayor, Cra. Gibbs, Spence, Liddle, Mainland, Headland, Humphrey, and Familton. The following memorandum for the Council's consideration wai submitted by the engineer :—: — The unfinished works on the waterworks contract proposed to be carried out as follows under superintendence of the following staff in addition to the engineer :— Mr Jebson, Clerk of Works ; Mr Howarth, Resident Engineer; Mr Kirk by, Inspector of WVorks ; Mr West, Inspector of Timber , Ist. The Rock section of the Black Point section to be made tight, trimmed, and finished at once. Separate account kept of this. 2nd. Awamoko section to be finished corn* plete by the end of this month— by day work. 3rd. Piece-work in cutting race downwards from Hendersons, in mile lengths or more. 4th. Landon section, tunnel driving (28 chains) to be let by tender Pipe tunnel, lower and reservoir sluices to be let to Walter Knight, Remainder of race cutting on this section to be let piece-work, in lengths to suit, by tender. This to be done at once, so as to fetch in water from tunnels for puddling purposes. sth. The reservoir embankment not to be filled in until this portion is finished. tith. Timber work. — Large aqueducts to be let if possible to present sub-contractors (labor only). All the other aqueducts to be similarly let as soon as timber can be put on the ground. 7th. 11 -chain and 28-chain tunnels all require lining to be put in and fronts built at once, by tender. Bth. Tenders to be called for timber and cement. The recommendations were all approved of, and it was resolved that tenders be called for works to be let by contract. Tenders to be in by Thursday, 9th inst., at noon, and to be laid before the Council at a special meeting to be held on Thursday, 9th insK, at 7.15 p.m. The Council then 6xed the rates of pay of officers as follows, viz. : Clerk of Work* (Mr Jebson), L 6 10s a week; Resident Engineer (Mr Howarth), L 6 10s do ; Inspector (Mr Kirkby), L 6 do ; Inspector (Mr West), L 6 do ;— includine all travelling allowances. Staff man, LlO a month ; chainman, LlO 16s do. All under a month's notice on either side.
