A CUNNING DOG.

A remarkable ttory of the Ngadty of a dog it told by the "Courier":— "A gentleman residing on the YaM Flaim district had a valuable pointer, which wat kept on the chain when not following it* matter or some member of the family. Several theop were killed in the neighborhood, and no traoe could be found of the destroyer. Suspicion retted on several dogs alternately until at length it pointed to the pointer. The owner of the dog would not think of it — he toouted tha bare idea of tuoh a contingency. Tht servant of a neighbor was positivo, but could not swear, that he taw the pointer kill a theep it 2 o'olook on the previous Wednesday morning. However, to make ' arauranoe doubly ture,' the owner of the pointer ordered a servant to conceal him* self dnring the night and keep an eye on the suspected animal. About half -past 12 that night the watcher wts astonished to observe a ttrange dog scramble over the fence and make up to the pointer. The Utter, by a dexterous movement of the hind legs, slipped hit collar, and both scampered off on their midnight excursion. As soon as the watchman had recovered his equanimity, he took the nock -strap in , a couple of holes. When the pointer re* 'urned at the groy dawn it endeavored to resume the chain, but finding the opera* tion impossible, it jumped over the fence, and has not been teen or heard of by its owner, lie now firmly behoves that hit pointor killed many a ewe in the neighbor* hood, and was a most consummate theep* stealer."
