CHRISTCHURCH. April 9.
In the Supremo Court, in the case of R. A. Buchanan, late Clerk of the R. M. Court, charged with embezzlement, from the evidence given, it appeared that Buchanan received for acting as Clerk of the Court, Customs Officer, and Postman, the sum of Ll2O per year The books of the Court showed that they had been kept in a very ourious manner. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Judge Johnston in discharging Buchanan, took occasion to refer to the loose manner in which some of the Government Departments are conducted in country distriots. He said it would be well if a stricter supervision were kept ov«r them generally than appears to be the a*a» at pr«««nt His Honor thought this would be done by a periodical visit of inspection being made l>y an officer of the Government. Nathan Powell, for horse stealing was sentenced to three years.
