The barque Tosso, Captain Boulton, sailed for Newcastle, N.S. VY., in ballast early on Thursday morning, The bsigantine Endeavor, Captain Dick, sailed for Tauranga at 5 a.m. yesterday, with a full cargo of breadstuffs shipped by her owners, Messrs J. and T. Meek. She got away with the first of the east-sou'-east breeze which prevailed yesterday, and would, no doubt, nuke a good day's run. Th« Onion Steam Ship Company's steamer Samson arrived from Dunedin at half-past six yesterday morning with a large cargo and 40 passengers. She took in a full cargo yesterday and left for Dunedin again at 6 o'clock last night. ■ Shippers of wool will do well to take note of the following, which is clipped from a recent Sydney paper :— There was on view at the Exchange to-day a sample of black-looking substance closely resembling slag. Had it not been for the label attached no person could have guessed that it was a portion of the burned wool discovered on board the Corinth at Brisbane. If the fire broke, out when the ship was any distance at sea we should probably have heard of another missiug vessel through the negligence of persons shipping wool in a damp state. Something which, occurred here ttfo years ago, when fortunately the discovery was made before the wool went on board the ship, ought to have led to the careful examination of washed and scoured wools prior to stowage. "We now learn that during the past month more than twenty bales had to be removed out of a ship at the Circular quay, in consequence of being packed damp and heating. This is so serious a. matter both to insurers and to the crew and passengers whose lives are jeopardised by the carnlessness or cupidity of others, that active measures should be taken to prevent its recurrence.
