ORIGINAL POETRY.

LOST LOVE.

A SONG.

In conclave vast the- Furies movo, And, sneering, taunt me with " lost love ; " They, circling round, recall each gleam Of youthful love's ocstatic dream. Of love that made mj bosoni glow, With passion soft as streamlets flow ; But now increased to seething roll Of waves, has darkoned o'er my soul. Loud fiendish jeers thoir voices raise — Thoir weirdly forms enthrall my gazo; With frightful dreams' despotic sway, They haunt my soul both night and day. An inward voice attompts in vain, To cheer my heart to joy again ; My very soul disdains the he, And echoes back a rebel sigh. In vain my eyos implore a tear, To ease my lieai t of its despair, For fiercer passions check its flow, Absorbing it in frenzied glow. Oh ! foolish heart, to soar so high! The eaglo only cleaves the sky — That vast domain of unknown space, The vantage ground of genius' race. With humblo lot content' my mind Within the homely cot shall find A gladd'ning pleasure only borno To w eary souls that vainly mourn.
