TIM A RU. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Timaru, 4th Sept., 1865. During the past week the rush to the Weal; Coast has evidently increased, as diggers, both on foot and on horseback, have thronged our streets " en route," and I hear th.it several of the inhabitants here intend soon to swell the stream, having had a violent attack of the yellow fever, the only remedy for which appears to be a trip to the West Coast. A little scene took place on board the Geelong on Friday last, which has caused no little excitement. A man of the name of Huist, in the employ of one of the Survey officna here, has been contracting debts with all who wei o foolish enough to trust him. Under pretence of seeing a fair friend safely on boaid the steamer, lie succeedeil in eluding his creditors. After the last boat had left for shore, and no appeaiunce of the delinquent, a searrh-wat rant was obtained by the landlord of the hotel at which he had been staying, as he had reason to suppose he had stolen some aiticles of clothing. Unfortunately for the ends of justice, nothing could be found upon the man, who was therefore allowed to go, thereby cheating a large number of creditors. Pity 'tis there is no law but civil process for such scamps as these ! The last week's rain was hailed with delight by all the inhabitants, as the tanks were nearly empty, and the fine weather gives signs of now permanently setting in. The agriculturists of the neighborhood were also beginning to feel the want of nature's tears. A Pigeon Match is to take place shortly at Salt Water Creek, near Timaru. The prizes are really worth contesting for, the fiist being ten guineas, the second five guineas, and the third to receive back his stakes. . The shooting is to be under the Hornsey Wood Rules. I will send you down the date and full particulais when advertised, when we shall hope some of the Oamaru "Sons of the Trigger" will be present to contest the shooting. Our neighbors in Pleasant Valley (about 20 miles from here) are getting up their annual local Races. As the place is not only pleasant by name and pleasant every way, the meeting is siue to be well patronised by the pleasure seekers of this district. The races are to he five in number, and ateDsiderable amount of money lias already been subscnued towaids the stakes. The promoters certainly deserve success. I hear that Messrs Forward and Pillion havo jusfc received from England four large vats, and we will now therefore be supplied with a " guid brewiu o' maut" on the home principle. I believe it is their intention to add to their already large pi emises a large malt-house, some time in the beginning of the year.
