The "Win. Miskiu arrived at Port Chalmers on the 4th inst. She leffc Lyttelton for Hokitika on the same night on which it is helieved the City of Dunedin was lost, nnd on that night she experienced a very strong gale from S S.E. On her arrival at Hokitika she got in over the bar in safety, and, after discharging cargo, she left on Monday the 29th ult., having had fine weather during her stay there. On Sunday, the 28th, a melancholy accident occurred in the river Hokitika. A mimher of boats had proceeded up the stream, and one of them containing a crew of five, came in contact with a snag, when she was upset, and all on board perished. Two of the men were named Oxter and Duncan. The names of the others are not known. Carter was a man about forty years of age, and had been employed in connection with the Steam Packet Hotel. At Hokitika the steamer Bruce, which had got ashore when attempting to take the bar, remained high and dry. She had got ashore on the north spit, near the Nelson, and the sand had accumulated around her, but it was expected that she would be got over the spit in the stream, and be able to resume the trade in which she had been engaged. Besides the intelligence of the calamity to the Fiery Star, the Dauntless brought news of two melancholy occurrences on the voyage of the H.M.S. Harrier from Auckland to England. On February 14, in lat. 19.20 S., long. 26.4 W., the Dauntless was signalled by the Harrier, and as two boats were seen to put off the ship was hove to. A boat with a Sub-Lieutenant came alongside, and one with a First-Lieutenant, who told Capt. Moore that whilst the boats were being lowered a sailor had fallen overboard, and sank before assistance could be given him. The object of sending to the Dauntless was that word might be conveyed to the senior officer on the New Zealand station that while the vessel was lying at the Falkland Islands Lieutenant Jerroham left for the purpose of having a day's shooting, and though the ship lay at the island for some time after, he had never returned. The Harrier left the Falkland Islands on the 28th January, for England. The majority of our readers will remember that the Harrier was for a long time on the New Zealand station, and left this for England in November last. — Southern Cross. The voyage of the Dauntless has not been by any means a peaceful one. The sailors have, on several occasions been, in a state of mutiny. They threatened to tak« the ship into the Cape of Good Hope. The captain broke open a case of rifles, consigned to the Colonial Secretary, and he and the officers always went armed. Six of the worst of the crew were put in irons during the voyage, and were yesterday taken off the ship bv the water-poliVe, and will be brought up at the Police Court to-day. The Dauntless has 420 passengers, principally Government immigrants. Three women had died on the voyage and seventeen children. — Southern Cross, 18th May.
