County Engineers’ Report

An apology from Cr. J. W. Dawson who is in Wellington, was sustained at Friday’s meeting of the Mangonui County Council, when Cr. W. J. Steed presided over an otherwise full at-'' tendance of Councillors. Mr. A. Maylin Theed, County Engineer, made report as follows : Generally fair weather enabled gradjng, etc., to be pushed on with and on many roads the surface is, at least, fair. Houhora Riding : Graders have trued up Great North Road to Te Kao, Unahi, West Coast, Spains, Paparore and Gills Roads. Deepening of side drains will be done on the lowlying roads as the subsoil becomes sufficiently dry. Awanui Riding : Grading was done on Church, Quarry, Kumi and Gills Roads. A 15” pipe culvert was put in at Kumi Road as a replacement. Oruru Riding : Heavy grading and general repair work were done on Paranui, Toatoa and Taylors Roads and Oruru-Taipa Road was graded twice. Repair metal was delivered to Paranui Road 77J c.yds., PeriaValley 37 h c.yds., Jacenthos 2 h c.yds , and Fern Flat 21 c.yds. Some bridge repair was done on Fern Flat road and a culvert replaced with pipes on Peria-Valley Road. Mangonui Riding: Mangonui-Oru-ru Road was graded. Small culverts were put in Grey Street East and Oruaiti side Road and a large wood culvert was repaired on Oruaiti Road. Victoria Valley Riding : Graders worked on Takahue, Mangatoetoe, Snelgars and Gardiners Roads and metal repairs included 95 c.yds. to Mangatoetoe, 15 c.yds. to Duncans, 71 c.yds. to Kitchen’s, 71 c.yds. to Panthers and one load each to Gardiners, Diggers Valley and Takahue Roads. Culvert replacements were done on Traceys (two), Takahue and Diggers Valley (1 large, 1 small). Bridge repair was done on Gardiners Road and Duncans Road. Tables were opened and culvei'ts cleaned on Mangatoetoe Road. Kaitaia Riding : Church, Ruaroa, Fryers, Cloughs, Donalds and Gills Roads were graded and culverts and drains received attention in most cas- ’ es. 22 1 c.ys. of repair metal were used on Fryers Road. Drains were opened on Bonnetts Road. Her e kino Riding : Heavy grading is now in hand and Powells and Smiths Roads have been completed. Unmetalled portion of Smiths Road towards I. Reid’s has also been shaped up. Repairs were done on Powells Road and repair metal was delivered as follows Whangape Road 27i c.yds., Herekino-Whangape 18£ c.yds., Powells 9 c.yds., and Diggers Valley 5 c.yds. Further repairs are" now in hand. Ahipara Riding : A dropout occurred on Epakauri Road which required repair, and road was patched with 20 c.yds. of metal.

Personal Misses Isa and Gloria Panther arrived from Whangarei on Friday to spend Labour weekend with their parents. Miss Margaret Main of Whangarei paid her first visit to this district on Friday and was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. M. Panther. Mrs. Petersen returned from Whangarei by plane on Thursday. Last weekend Mr. Keith Panther motored to Whangarei and Kokopu. Mr. Reece White who has been in hospital for some time, is now on the improve. Mr. and Mrs. Selwyn White and family, Susanne and Roger, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. A. White. Miss Patricia Geddes was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. White for Labour weekend.
