County Engineer’s Report

At the monthly meeting of the Mangonui County Council held on Wednesday, with Mr. W. J. Steed residing, the Engineer made report as follows : Wet weather continued over most cf the period with the result that load surfaces have all suffered some damage. Heavy rain storms caused some slipping and washouts. Delivery of repair metal reached a total of over 1400 c.yds. while some 710 c.yds. was spread on new works. llouhora Riding : Great North Road was graded as far as Ngataki and several soft places were drained and rock-filled. West Coast, Unahi. Spains, Gills and Paparore Roads were graded' also. Pipes were delivered for a culvert on Ridge Road. Repair metal was delivered to Great North Road 111 c.yds., West Coast 10 c.yds., Spains 50 c.yds., Gills 48 c.yds., and done to Gills Road bridge and to Wai- | hopo Bridge. Awanui Riding : Graders cleared j tables on Duncans, Champions and | Rileys Roads and raked in on Dun- ! cans, Tokerau Beach, Pekerau, Kurni, Church and Quarry Roads. Metal for repair was delivered as follows—Dun- | cans 821 c.yds., Tokerau Beach 51 | c.yds.. Churtons 3 c.yds., Zidichs 9 | c.yds., Parapara 27 c.yds., Rileys 33 ! c.yds., Quarry 24 c.yds., Gills 52 c.yds rad Church 5 c.yds. to Oruru-Taipa Road, 3 c.yds. Parapara, 3 c.yds. Peria-Valley, 3 c.yds. Paranui and 6 c.yds. to Toa Toa Roads. A slip and some tables on Oruru-Taipa Road were cleared. Rvans Bridge on Kohumaru Road became unsafe and repairs are in hand, be load being closed in the meantime. Two culverts were replaced with pices on the Peria-Valley Road. Mangcnui Riding : Metal repair was in hand on the following roads—--1 'Kohumaru 81 c.yds., Hihi 3 c.yds., M. I Fosters 12 c.yds., Oruaiti 35 c.yds., Moreys 6 c.yds and Mangonui-Oruru ; 21 c.yds. Township streets- also rej ceived metal as follows—Domain 45 I c.yds.. Tasman 24 c.yds., Thomas 21 i c.yds., Williams 21 c.yds., Mills Bay j 24 c.vds., Cemetery 9 c.yds., AlexandI ers 9 c.yds. and Grey St. East 6 c.yds. j A culvert was repaired on Mill Bay | Road and temporary repairs done to Mangonui Wharf. i Victoria Valley Riding : Graders shaped up Takahue Road and cleared some tables on Duncans and Dawsons j Access Roads. Repair metal included 121 c.yds. Mangatoetoe, 61 c.yds. Te Rore, 10 c.yds. Panthers, 6 c.yds. Peria-Valley. 3 c.yds. Wallaces, 7i I c vds. Duncans, 2i c.yds. Dawsons

Access, 10 c.yds. Kitchens, 5 c.yds. Traceys. 51 c.yds. Diggers Valley, 3 c.yds. Braithwaites, 15 c.yds. Waiotehue, 90 c.yds. Takahue, 15 c.yds. Takahue Saddle and 12 c.yds. Werners Roads. A further 54 c.yds of metal was delivered on Cemetery Road but owing to a soft section of formation the balance of the road cannot, at present, be completed. Some Tabling was done on Te Rore and Saddle Roads. Quarrying is in hand at Metcalfes Quarry. Kaitaia Riding : Grading' was .done on Ruaroa, Wireless and Church Roads and tables opened on Cloughs and Church Roads. Metal repairs were done as follows —Gills 52i c.yds., Church •35 c.yds., Cloughs SI c.yds., Ruaroa 52 c.yds., Wireless 9 c.yds., Donalds 191 c.yds., and Fryers 202c.yds. Deck repairs were done at Jobs Bridge on Cloughs Road. Donalds Road was seriously scoured and drains ar.d tables were opened. Herekino Riding : Both Gallon and Tow Grader outfit are engaged clearng tables and shaping up roads, He-

vekino, Whangape, Puhata and Owhata Roads being done to date. Repair metalling is in hand and to 14th inst. had included 162 c.yds. on Diggers Valley, 121 c.yds. on Whangape-Here-kino and 10 c.yds. -on Puhata. Considerable handwork was done on tables and drains and two culverts have been replaced with pipes. Bridge repairs were in hand at two bridges on Diggers Valley Road. Ahipara Riding Graders have shaped up Roma, Foreshore, Township and Epakauri Roads. A small timber bridge was repaired on Epakauri Road and waterway opened. Government Grants Okakewai Road : Metalling was completed except for some knapping. Oruru-Taipa Flood Area :/ A metoiled track was put across new worl and with : nprovement in weather i appears that it will be possible fc maintain traffic across the work. Plant : New Caterpillar 112 wai taken over and is in commission. Par for Auto Patrol grader arrived an< machine has been re-assembled. Building Permits : 18 Permits ag gregating £4OIO weie issued.
