Cricket

Saturday’s games completed the second round of the Mangonui Cricket Association’s senior grade champion- 1 ship. The third round will commence j next Saturday, and it is hoped that a full round will be completed before the season closes. Kaitaia, playing Nomads B, added yet a further four points to tneir j total, still leaving them out in front on the championship points table. In this game Nomads batted first with everything in their favour. The outfield was more or less dead after j the recent heavy rains, and the wicket from the bowlers’ point was sticky ' and unpredictable. McPherson for Nomads batted confidently when opening with Archbold, and reached a total of 40 before being dismissed by Mackintosh. Archbold j had been early dismissed for 8, being caught by Mackintosh by a particu- j larly fine gymnastic catch off Thompson. _ L. Beazley and J. Beazley made 33 : and 25 respectively, both finally sue- 1 cumbing to the bowling of Subritzky. The total score of the side at 173 | looked impressive, and Nomads had ivery right to think that they were 1 on the winning end, especially in view j of the fact that Kaitaia were short j of some of what are considered to be j their best players, some having left j the district, and one (Russell) being j away on holiday. Jamieson and Mackintosh opened for Kaitaia, and when the former was dismissed for 1, Nomads felt jubilant. Mackintosh partnered by Ferguson knocked up a nice 55, and Ferguson contributed a useful 18. Bradford took Ferguson’s place, compiling a faultless 52 before retiring. O’Carroll followed, and immediately collared the bowling, being 51 before he was bowled by Knightbridge. With only three wickets down, Kaitaia had passed the total of 173 made by Nomads, and were thus assured of a first innings victory, and it was obvious that there woudl not be sufficient time to play the match out. So their remaining batsmen went in merely to have a strike. Mangataiore had a six point win, defeating Nomads A by five wickets. This was a game in which small scores predominated, and apparently the wicket was such that it was all in favour of tha bowlers. Details of the scoring are as follows :

VICTORIA VALLEY v. PERIA Unfortunately no details of the scoring in this game are to hand at the time of going to press, but in generalising on the game it is interesting' to note that Victoria Valley batted first and were dismissed for the total of 76, of which G. Dawson made 46. Foster and Burdett bowling for Peria took four wickets each. Peria then replied with a bright 78, Foster being top batsman with 37. With Victoria Valley’s second innings, a rot seemed to set in amongst the batsmen, for the side was all out for 24. It looked an easy thing from then on for Peria, but even here, the bowling of Dawson and N. Panther seemed at one stage as if the game might yet be pulled out of the fire, and thus gain a six-point win for Victoria Valley. But it was not to be. Peria reached the required number of runs to

secure a six-point win for themselves But to make the 23, they lost eigh wickets. This put an end to a really exciting game which was enjoyed to the full by the large number of spectators gathered. Fred Panther for the first time in his cricketing career took unto himself a pair of spectacles. In other words, he failed to score in either innings. The visiting team were entertained right royally at lunch by the Peria ladies. -* SATURDAY’S DRAW Following is the draw for games to be played on Saturday next, when the third round of the Mangonui Cricket Association’s senior grade championship will commence. Home teams are mentioned first : Peria v. Mangataiore. Nomads B v. Nomads A. Victoria Valley v. Kaitaia. There will be no games played on Saturday, March 5, owing to that being Show Day. Championship games will be proceeded with on Saturday, March 12.
