THE NAME "TAIPA”
Sir. —I wish to bring to your notice the fact that the meaning given in a recent copy of the AGE of Taipa is, I think, not correct. The old natives always said it meant the fortifications around the water, and when one takes notice almost every hilltop around Taipa was a pa in days gone by. “Tai” means water and **pa” a native fortification. I have interviewed some of the oldest Maoris this last week, and they say this is the correct meaning, and they ought to know. Yours, etc., A LOCAL RESIDENT.
