Harbour Board Makes Inspection

AWANUI HARBOUR I Despite the inclemency of the II weather yesterday, the Awanui Harbour Board members made a full and | thorough inspection of all the waterways and properties under its jurisdiction. At 9 a.m. almost the full Board emI barked on the launch of Mr. L. Walker, the harbourmaster, and proceeded down stream, taking particular note of the condition of the banks of the river, with particular attention being paid to those parts where apparent erosion was taking place. Beacons were inspected, and the

party went ashore at two points to inspect the drift of sand and to see the growth of trees that had been planted by the Board to prevent this drift. i Mr. A. J. Mackintosh, the Board’s secretary, pointed out by demonstration, just how shallow the harbour had become in one spot where it was assumed that there was plenty of water. Members were surprised at this apparent change from deep water to shallow. Alternative deep water spots that had been suggested by residents of the county were also inspected, and in most cases found wanting. Most members of their own accord I and desire took soundings at various spots, and in the main were somewhat disappointed with the results. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Steed, and Mr. W. Hales took specimens of the sea bottom, but it was decided that no good purpose would be served by | bringing these specimens back t* port. Therefore, the residue was thrown overboard before the launch reached the river on the return trip. The party landed at the Awanui Wharf at about 8 p.m.
