Mangonui Colts Win Golden Bloom Shield Game

V Mangonui defeated the Bay ol Islands by the narrow margin of three runs in the Colts’ game for the Golden Bloom Shield played ever two days on Friday and Saturday at the A. and P. ground in Kaitaia. Mangonui established a first innings lead of 52 runs, and in their second innings knocked up 87, thus leaving the Bay of Islands to compile 140 to win. Determinedly the visitors went in to do their best to achieve this objective, and the Mangonui attack 1 seemed unable to cope with the sterling defence of the opening batmen, Slatter and Edwards, who made 67 before the first wicket fell. The Bay team did not make the same mistake as had the seniors, and , from the very time of taking first block, it was obvious that they were out to get runs. They did their best to make every stroke a scoring and eventual winning stroke, and as hard j as they tried, so did the Mangonui attack become more and more dour. The end came when Godfrey was dismissed by a nice catch by L. Kitchen off McPherson, the side only re--1 quiring 4 runs for an outright victory. Mangonui thus were the side that made the outright win, and thus will have to travel to attempt to bring [ the shield back to the county. This I game will be played sometime Before | the end of March. Details of the scoring are as follows : Mangonui, Ist Innings Northwood, c Hall b Paki 4 j Queenin, c Bagshaw b Kingdon 14 j D.
