Races at Coopers Beach on New Year’s Day The Maoris of the Mangonui district are putting on their usual sports at Coopers Beach this year and as an added attraction they are including five horse events. The chief event, the Mangonui Cup, carries prize money of £2O and other races up to £lO. One event is for ponies up to 14.2 hands and another event is for horses that have worked in a plough. The usual haka and poi events will be held and there will be foot races and numerous children’s races. The inevitable kapa maori will be provided and there will be ice cream and hot water for sale.
