CRICKET UMPIRING POOR “Umpiring is the weakest link in the cricketing chain in this County,” said Mr. J. M. Dawson, President, at a meeting of the Mangonui Cricket Association on Tuesday evening. Club delegates fully agreed. Poor umpiring was having a bad effect on cricket in the County, especially amongst the juniors, said Mr. H. Switzer. Several incidents of illogical decisions were cited. Delegates generally agreed that it was extremely j hard for a bowler to be successful with an lbw appeal on a concrete wicket. This discussion was the outcome of a request from the visiting Auckland City and Suburban team at

Christmas to provide umpires for their matches. Mr. J. M. Dawson was appointed official umpire. The Association felt that umpires should be absolutely certain of their decisions. Too often were young umpires swayed by a confident appeal.
