Down the Street
By Rando'j One well known Kaitaia photographer requests us to prim the Old Egyptian Law inferring that it is extremely unlucky to be married., on a Saturday especially during the bowling season. ■fir The heat was certainly applied on election day. To hear vehicles splashing along through the soft tar in Commerce St., you’d have almost thought there had been a heavy shower. * Election day was a real gala day in Kaitaia. The country folk flocked in to town only to find that most of the shops had closed at 2 p.m. Busiest people that afternoon were polling clerks and returning officers. e About five minutes to twelve on polling day it was obvious as to how many were going to vote on the liquor question. Whether it was to celebrate with or to console themselves with, however, we couldn’t tell. Shrewd eyes in the two tents outside the booth however, seemed to sum up that position. * The County may shortly expect improvements to Church Rd. County Councillors who had a complimentary flight on Monday had a bird’s eye view of just where this road should go. And we heard the Chairman state that even up there he felt many of the potholes in county roads. * Shops in Commerce St. are rapidly taking on a festive appearance. Santa Claus, bells and the usual bunting can be seen in more than a few shop windows. Believe it or not, ■ there’s only 26 days to go. * Another sign of the times the Princess has got a first New Zealand release showing this evening. * If you get a spare moment, read “Debris." —it’s improving, but slowly. * Those School Dental Clinic Nurses have been at it again. That animated scene in Mr. J. Knox’s window-, urging parents to enrol pre-school children at the clinic is a really fine effort. * Surely the Kaitaia Voluntary Brigade had enough practice in the weekend without being called out on Sunday evening to a scrub fire on Reservoir Hill.
