Memorial to Col. Allen Bell

Idea Incorporated in Other Plans Appointed by the County Council. Cr. F. Holder waited on the Borough Council on Wednesday evening, asking that they consider the beautifying of, and the erection of a band rotunda, swings for children, seats, etc., in the reserve between the rest room and Church road. He also suggested that memorial gates of a suitable size be erected to the memory of the late Col. Allen Bell, who aid so much to advance Kaitaia and the North. "Very few people realised just what Col. Bell did for the North," stated Mr. Holder. It would be a gracious act to erect memorial gates. There was a small memorial at Spirits Bay, but one was necessary in Kaitaia. As he had worked for so long with Col. Bell, Mr. Holder felt that he should be the one to battle for a memorial. Cr. L. G. Thompson recommended that the suggestion be left in the hands of the Town Planning Committee, which hoped to present a report to the Borough Council in the near future. With Mr. Holder’s deputation, a letter was read from the W.D.F.U. suggesting that the Eorough Council place seats adjacent to the rest room. It was decided to place seats adjacent to the southern end of the iibrary. Fifteen pounds had already been subscribed for this work, it was reported. LABOUR CANDIDATE’S CAMPAIGN Meetings addressed by Mr. H. K. Hatrick, Labour candidate for the Hobson electorate, in the Whangaroa and Mangonui Counties were most successful. At Opua it was evident that there was a strong inclination towards t-he Labour policy, while at Paihia many residents assembled at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 4, to hear the case for Labour. Kawakawa on November 5 demonstrated a keen interest with 180 present, while on the following evening an audience of 130 heard M*\ Hatrick at one of his most successful meetings to date. The Ohaeawai and Kaikohe meetings further demonstrated the interest that the Labour candidate has created. This week Mr. Hatrick started a series of meetings in the territory that was formerly in Kaipara. Kaitaia will be again visited prior to the 27th.
