BASKETBALL
In fine weather the Mangonui Basketball Association continued its Championship last Saturday. The standard of play was again of a high standard. High School A, by defeating Awanui A, remain the holders of the Peter Pan Shield. Results were : Awanui B 8, v. Business Girls 6. Pukepoto 12, v. Ahipara B 7. Kaitaia 8, v. Ahipara A 5. High School B 16, v. Old Pupils Jr. 1. Ramblers 8, v. Old Pupils Snr. 5. Waiharara a bye. The draw for next Saturday, 25th May, is : , Old Pupils Jnr. v. Waiharara. Old Pupils Snr. v. High School A. Awanui B v. Kaitaia. Business Girls v. High School B. Ahipara B v. Awanui A. Ramblers v. Ahipara A. Waiharara v. Pukepoto. Deep concern is felt this season at the rough standard of play being shown by several teams in the Manganui Basketball competition. As the season is still early, it is sincerely hoped that this may be put down as the cause. The courts available have very little side or back play, and with the iron fence surrounding one of the courts, serious injury to players may result. Several girls this week are suffering from bruises and abrasions as the result of last Saturday’s games. Spectators and players alike hope that steps will be taken to penalise teams for this unnecessary type of rough play.
