HORSEBREAKING DEMONSTRATION IN KAITAIA
A very interesting and capable demonstration of horse-breaking was given by Mr. V. Bannatyre at the Kaitaia saleyards last Sunday when he went to work on a young working animal which had never been previously handled, and within 45 minutes was able to put collar, chains and halter on without difficulty, and climb all over the horse’s back while it stood perfectly still. At the outset Mr. Bannatyre said that a horse should not be roped until it was possible to walk up to it and put the rope on by hand, and that he would commence by showing the animal that he was not going to hurt it. This he did with the aid of light tea-tree sticks of varying lengths, and eventually proved his statement by making the animal perfectly docile within the above time. About 50 pex-sons were present at the demonstration which proved how quickly kindness and patience as applied by an expert could gain the confiidence of a horse.
